When the search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature took off about two years ago, only three Philippine natural wonders made it to the list of nominees – the Tubattaha Reef in Palawan, Mayon Volcano in Albay and the Chocolate hillsin Bohol. Expectations ran high that any of those three Philippine natural wonders would end up to be one of 21 finalists by early 2009. But it took a late addition for the Philippines to achieve that feat – thePuerto Prinsesa Underground river in Palawan.
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines.
It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea.
It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest.
At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water’s edge. Monkeys, large monitor lizards, and squirrels find their niche on the beach near the cave.
Now is the time for all Filipinos, home and abroad, to again show the passion they had in the early rounds of the voting. Now is the time to vote. Vote now, Kabayan! Let us tell the world that the Philippines is home to one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
